4 Blocks Literacy Framework


Four Blocks is a multimethod, multilevel literacy framework developed by Pat Cunningham and Dottie Hall of Wake Forest University and utilized by thousands elementary classrooms.






                                     

Working With Words Block

Segment 1 - Word Wall Routine (10 - 15 minutes)


The Word Wall Routine Section of the Words Block is divided into two parts:


Focus on the Week's Word Wall Words 

Start the Words Block each day with the five words selected for the week.  

 

  1. Relate word to meaning or use - Use a sentence or other clue to bring meaning to the word being focused on.

  2. Chant / Cheer word - Use a cheer to spelling the word aloud.  (Use 3 to 4 cheers each day).  Follow the link above to some suggested cheers.

    • In seat – clap, snap, drum, tap, etc.

    • Standing up – Blast Off, Lumberjack, Chalkboard, Pitch, etc.

  3. Write word on paper - Have the children write each word on a piece of paper.  Handwriting instruction may be done during this time.

  4. Repeat for the other words for the week


On-The-Back Activities - One of the following activities is done with the remaining time of this section.
