4 Blocks Literacy Framework


Four Blocks is a multimethod, multilevel literacy framework developed by Pat Cunningham and Dottie Hall of Wake Forest University and utilized by thousands elementary classrooms.






                                     
Self-Selected Reading Block Overview
Focus:  
  • Build fluency in reading
  • •Build confidence by allowing students to work with text most appropriate to their reading level
  • •Allow students to read books they are interested in
Segment One: 5 - 10 minutes
  • Teacher read aloud to students
  • •Variety of levels, topic, and authors are selected
Segment Two: 15 - 20 minutes
  • Students read from books in their group’s book basket
    • –real reading,
    • –picture walk, or
    • –retell familiar stories
  • •Teacher holds conferences with 1/5 of the students
Segment Three (5 - 10 minutes)
  • One or two students share what they have read in the Reader's Chair
  • Classmates ask the reader questions.  (Teachers should model appropriate questions).
