4 Blocks Literacy Framework


Four Blocks is a multimethod, multilevel literacy framework developed by Pat Cunningham and Dottie Hall of Wake Forest University and utilized by thousands elementary classrooms.






                                     
Guided Reading Overview
Focus:
  • Expose children to wide range of literature
  • Teach comprehension strategies
  • Teach children to read in materials that become increasingly more difficult
Segment One: 10 - 15 minutes
Teacher directs a whole group lesson
  • builds students’ prior knowledge
  • leads a shared, choral, or echo reading
  • discusses key vocabulary in context of story

Segment Two: 15 - 20 minutes
Reading of text using flexible grouping
